Welcome

Description

Safety, including obeying the speed limit, should always be the first priority when driving on the highway. Within that constraint, the speed we drive at is a compromise between time and fuel efficiency.

Whilst it is tempting to drive faster to try to save a little time, the faster you go the less time you actually save. For example, if you go from 30 to 40 mph you will reduce your time by 25%. However, if you go from 40 to 50 mph the reduction is only 20%, and from 50 to 60 mph it is only 17%.

Most cars are designed to be at their most fuel efficient when driving at a steady pace between 40-60 miles per hour. Above that, speed fuel efficiency drops rapidly. Below that range, the fuel efficiency of non-hybrid gas or diesel vehicles also drops.

When you are cruising along the highway have you ever wondered what the potential time savings or fuel costs of going faster or slower. Highway Pace does those calculations for you and updates instantly when your speed changes.

Highway Pace shows you the difference in time and fuel efficiency between going 10 mph faster or slower than your current speed. It will also show you the cost difference based on the price of fuel which you can update at any time.

The fuel efficiency graphs Highway Pace uses are based on statistics published by the  U.S. Department of Energy for seven different classes of car. You can select the class that best fits your car, and edit the graph to match your car’s manufacturer’s estimates.

Features

Safety

Highway Pace is intended to be used handsfree. It is designed to give you the information you need in a glanceable format that will not take your attention away from the road. In landscape orientation only the data is shown. In portrait mode you can hide all the controls by toggling the Driving lock button.

Style

You can choose to see either the absolute time and efficiency values for each speed, or the relative values compared to the current speed.

Speed

The app measures your current speed using your phone’s GPS and calculates the time and fuel efficiency for that speed and for speeds a step above and  a step below it. The default step is 10 mph but you can change it to any value between 1 and 20.

Timed Distance

The time shown is calculated based on a set distance. The default is 10 miles and you can change this to any value between 1 and 100 miles.

Efficiency Standard

You can choose to have your fuel efficiency calculated as mph, km/L, or  L/100km.

Fuel Profile

You can choose one of seven preset fuel efficiency profiles and edit the graph to align it with the manufacturer’s claims for your vehicle.

Distance Measure

You can choose whether speed and distance is shown in miles or kilometers.

Fuel Price

You can update the fuel price that is used to calculate the cost at any time.

Currency Symbol

You can choose the currency symbol shown, from either the Dollar, Euro or UK Pound.
